Effective Expectations

A major aspect of classroom management includes establishing effective expectations for your class. One of the most damaging things a teacher can do in regards to classroom management is to have an expectation that is not successfully enforced. Inconsistency will breed contempt for classroom expectations! Every teacher needs to establish appropriate class expectations to create a successful environment. Many teachers confuse class expectations with class rules. Although class expectations may include class rules, they are much more. Class expectations communicate what the teacher has determined the students need to do in order to be successful in class. The following items may be included in class expectations: materials needed, class work and homework procedures, make up procedures, attendance policy and class rules (behavioral expectations.)

Tips for Creating Class Expectations

  1. Regular Attendance

  6. Be Respectful of people and property

  7. Be Responsible

  8. Be Honest

  9. Follow all school and class rules at all times
