7 Hot Fixes for Your Sound Drivers
Sound driver errors can be a real pain in the backside, but there are quick and easy methods for fixing problems related to your computer’s sound. Often, it’s possible to fix no sound issues with just a few clicks of the mouse. Let’s do a quick overview of ways you can solve sound problems related to your sound drivers or sound card.
1. Restart your computer
Sometimes, a system process can interfere with your sound drivers, or an application can cause a sudden spike in virtual memory. These, along with other occurrences, can sometimes be remedied by simply restarting the computer. Beware, however, of relying on this as a quick fix. If you’re dealing with system freezes and bad applications time and again, you could be facing malware or virus issues, which means it’s imperative to run an antivirus program with a good track record.
2. Disconnect and then Reconnect Your Speakers
Nowadays, most sound cards will pop up a dialog box as soon as you plug in a sound device. You can try unplugging and then plugging in your device to open this box. You might have to adjust some of the options in this dialog box to reflect your hardware settings.
3. Plug In a Different Sound Component
You might be dealing with faulty or broken hardware. That’s why it’s a good idea to switch out your speakers or headphones with a different set of hardware and then test your sound. This is a good way of finding out whether the sound problem is related to your sound drivers or simply broken components. Try this method early on when you’re troubleshooting sound problems.
4. Test the Default Sound Device
If you’ve ever run an update on your operating system, you might notice that your playback device has changed. This will affect your sound settings. As a result, you can test this in the following manner:
A. Click “Start.”
B. Type “Sound” in the Search Box.
C. Open the tab labeled “Playback.” Ensure that there’s a check mark next to the “Speakers” default device. Click “Properties” then go to the “Advanced” tab. Ensure that you have the correct value set for “Default Format.” Or, click “Configure” and then ensure that everything is configured the right way.
D. Click the device that you wish to establish as the default sound device and click “Set Default.”
E. Click “OK.”
Test your sound. If you can hear sound now, you’ve fixed the problem. If not, move to step 5.
5. Confirm that there’s a Sound Driver Installed
Without a sound driver, your computer can’t produce any sound. Here’s how to ensure that there’s a sound driver installed.
A. Click “Start.”
B. In the Search box, type “Device Manager.” Press Enter.
C. Expand the menu labeled “Sound, video, and game controllers.”
If you see a speaker next to a driver, then you have a driver installed. A yellow question mark next to the driver means the driver isn’t functioning.
6. Try Reloading Your Sound Driver
A. Click “Start.”
B. Type “Device Manager” into the search box. Press Enter.
C. Find the audio device.
D. Right-click on the device, then open “Properties.”
E. Select the “Driver” tab. Click “Uninstall.”
F. Clear the checkbox for “Delete the Driver Software for this device.”
G. Click OK.
H. Back to the Device Manager dialog box, select the menu labeled “Action” and click “Scan for hardware changes.”
I. Clock the box.
Again, test your sound. If it’s working, great. If not, go to step 7.
7. Update the sound driver
You can update the sound driver in a multitude of ways. Either you can manually install a new sound driver by visiting the manufacturer’s web site, or you can install driver update software that will do it for you. If you can find good driver update software, this is the preferable way to go, because it will comprehensively locate all of your outdated drivers and replace them with new ones. Then, you sound should work again. Test it, and you should notice that you can hear sound from your machine again.
